Oscar Recap & Contest Winners

That the “best film” in America is a shot-for-shot remake of a cult Hong Kong classic says something about the current state of the Hollywood blockbuster. It also says something about The Academy. Though fan favourites like Little Miss Sunshine did well across categories and indy favourites like Pan’s Labyrinth and An Inconvenient Truth had their share of time in the winner’s circle, more than a few deserving partygoers went home empty handed, including Gossling’s latest effort in Half Nelson and the entire viewing public at Borat’s absence from the festivities. In the grand scope of Oscar history, Helen Mirren’s melodramatic win as Elizabeth Windsor wasn’t quite as surprising as Polanski’s fugative win for The Pianist, but their acceptance speeches were equally unorthodox.

All in all, it was a good weekend for cinema, though in truth, it was mostly thanks to the considerably lower-key Independent Spirit Awards. Many thanks go out to all who participated in this year’s Oscar survey. Don’t forget to come by the store to find out if you won!
